What are platelets?
Platelets are the tiny particles in blood that help form clots to stop bleeding. Platelets are very fragile and must be transfused within five days of collection.

Who needs platelets?
Patients being treated for cancer, leukemia or other serious diseases.

Who can donate platelets?
If you are in good health, age 17 or older, and meet other blood donor criteria. The criteria are nearly the same as those for donating blood.

How often can I give platelets?
You can donate platelets up to 24 times a year.

How long does it take to donate platelets?
A platelet procedure takes about two hours. Donors are encouraged to relax during the process. Videos and TV are available for your enjoyment. WiFi is available in some locations. Early morning, evening and weekend appointments are also available.

Is donating platelets safe?
Yes! Each donation is closely monitored by an American Red Cross staff member. The donation does not significantly decrease the number of platelets in your body and the donated platelets are quickly replenished.
