After Your Surgery

Patients going home will return to SurgiCare
When you return to SurgiCare, you will be checked in by your post-op team. You may still be very sleepy. This is where you will be rejoined with your family and friends. Most patients are in SurgiCare about an hour before they are dismissed home. Tell your nurse if you are hurting or feel sick to your stomach. She will help you to feel better. After surgery, you may not be pain free, but our goal is to make you as comfortable as possible. Most patients will remain on the stretcher for about 30 minutes. 

Please do not drink anything while you are lying down. It can make you feel more nauseated. When you are alert enough and it is time, your post-op team will help you get dressed, go to the bathroom and sit up in a recliner. We will get you something to drink and roll the stretcher out of your room. 

Need Something? Tell us! Warm blankets, bathroom visit, or a refill on your drink - we are here to meet the needs of you and your family. 

Going home
Before you go home, your nurse will talk to you and your family. Your nurse will go over any discharge instructions from your doctor, including any instructions about your follow up appointment to see your doctor, any special care instructions for your surgery site, any activity or diet restrictions, and any other special instructions your doctor may have. 

Your nurse will give you any prescriptions your doctor has written. Sometimes your doctor may have given some special instructions to your family when your doctor spoke to them after your surgery. If you or your family have any questions or concerns, please let us know before you leave. We want to make sure we have met all of your needs and expectations. Your family will be instructed to pull their car to the discharge area. You will be assisted to your car in a wheelchair by our staff.
