AMERICUS, GA -- March 7, 2013 — Americus native Charlene Pennymon has always had a love for running, and she achieved a lifelong dream by qualifying for this year’s Boston Marathon. Little did she or any of the thousands of other runners know what would happen on that fateful day when two explosions rocked this event and changed it forever.

However, one thing won’t change, and that is Pennymon continuing her passion of running.

“I will continue to run, and I plan on running in the Boston Marathon next year,” said Pennymon, speaking to family, friends and hospital staff members at a luncheon held at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in her honor. “It was a wonderful experience, and despite the tragic events we have to keep living our lives because if we don’t the bad guys have won.”

Pennymon was honored for completing the Boston Marathon this year after months of intensive training. She finished just minutes ahead of the two explosions that killed three people and injured hundreds of more. Her husband was actually closer to the finish line than she was, but both escaped unharmed.

“Charlene is a role model for our community,” said Marcus Johnson, Director of Marketing & PR. “To run and finish a marathon is a tremendous accomplishment, and when you add the drama that ensued then that amplifies it even more. We are committed to promoting healthy and active lifestyles, and Charlene is an example for all of us to work hard, eat right and take care of our bodies. She has been a friend of the hospital for years, and everyone here is proud of her and happy she made it back home safely.”

Johnson also announced during the event that Pennymon will be the keynote speaker for Phoebe Sumter’s 4th Annual Women’s Health Conference, which will take place on Saturday, May 18th at 8 am at the Student Success Center on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University.

“We couldn’t think of a better person to be our keynote speaker this year,” said Johnson.
