Did You Know? One common type of lower back pain is called sciatica. It is caused by a herniated or ruptured disc pressing on the sciatic nerve, says the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Because the sciatic nerve carries nerve fibers down the leg, the pain can extend from the lower back, through the buttocks and down the leg past the knee.
